How to actually use your wearable data (not just step counts)
Most people glance at their step count, close the app and move on. But a modern wearable is quietly recording a far richer set of signals - your sleep, your heart-rate variability, your resting heart rate, a recovery or readiness score and your overall activity. Used well, those tell you much more about how your body is coping than steps ever could.
This guide covers the wearable metrics that actually matter, what each one broadly reflects, and - most importantly - how to read trends rather than chase daily noise. The metrics that matter
Beyond steps, a handful of metrics carry most of the useful signal. You do not need all of them, and different devices emphasise different ones, but these are the streams worth paying attention to:
- Sleep - total duration and the split across light, deep and REM stages
- Heart-rate variability (HRV) - the variation between heartbeats, a rough gauge of recovery and stress
- Resting heart rate (RHR) - your heart rate at rest, typically measured overnight
- Recovery or readiness - a composite score some devices build from HRV, RHR and sleep
- Activity - not just steps, but active minutes, training load and intensity
What each metric broadly reflects
Sleep duration and stages broadly reflect how much genuine rest you are getting; consistently short or fragmented sleep tends to show up before you consciously feel it. HRV broadly reflects the balance between effort and recovery - higher is generally a sign of a well-recovered body, though what counts as 'normal' is very individual.
Resting heart rate broadly reflects cardiovascular strain and recovery, and tends to creep up when you are run-down, under-slept or coming down with something. Recovery or readiness scores simply bundle these together into a single daily prompt. Activity metrics reflect how much you are moving and how hard. None of these is a verdict - each is a general indicator, most useful as one input among several.
Read trends, not daily noise
The single biggest mistake is reading a wearable day by day. A poor night's sleep, a late meal, a glass of wine, a stressful afternoon or even how the device sat on your wrist can swing a single day's HRV or recovery score noticeably. Reacting to one bad number is a recipe for anxiety, not insight.
Instead, look at the direction over a week or a month. A gentle downward drift in HRV across two weeks, or a resting heart rate that has been steadily rising, is far more meaningful than any single morning. Think of each day as a noisy data point and the trend line as the actual signal - that is where wearables earn their keep.
Combining sources without the chaos
Plenty of people wear one device, track sleep in another app and have an older platform's history sitting unused. Apple Health, Garmin, Whoop, Oura and Fitbit each measure overlapping things in slightly different ways, and flicking between apps makes it almost impossible to see a coherent trend.
Bringing these streams into one place lets you read a single, consistent picture over time rather than several fragmented ones - and to compare like with like. The aim is fewer apps and a clearer view, not yet another dashboard to check, so that the trend across all your data is something you can actually act on.
Avoiding over-interpretation
Wearables are remarkable, but they are consumer devices, not medical instruments. Their sleep staging is an estimate, their HRV depends on how and when it is measured, and their scores are proprietary algorithms rather than clinical readings. Treat the numbers as helpful approximations, not precise truth.
The healthy habit is to use wearable data to ask better questions, not to reach conclusions. A persistent trend you cannot explain - a steadily rising resting heart rate, say - is a good reason to check in with a clinician, who can interpret it properly. The data informs the conversation; it does not replace it.

Usually not. A single day's HRV or recovery score is easily swung by poor sleep, alcohol, stress or how the device was worn. The trend over a week or month is far more meaningful than any one reading.
How accurate is wearable sleep tracking?
Wearables estimate sleep and its stages rather than measuring them clinically, so treat the figures as useful approximations rather than precise truth. They are still valuable for spotting trends in your own sleep over time.
